If I were to live in one of those patchy majority-minority areas, I would be far more fearful of being targeted for genocide a la Yugoslavia than optimistic about being able to have my own country. I'm surprised, frankly, by how geographically restricted the non-white-majority counties are. Even in the broader bistate metro areas of Chicago and St. Louis, this map says whites are the most numerous group in each county. I would have felt sure that a county or two were majority-Black in each of those.
When was your travel in the Midwest, if you don't mind my asking? My late husband was 99% European in ancestry, but for some reason had rather olive skin, combined with a "noble" French schnoz. Shortly after Sept. 11 he caught one or two strangers giving him hateful looks in the local grocery store. He thought it could be that they thought he looked Middle Eastern. (Both women, no self-defense needed.)
